Armed robbers held about 25 bank employees and customers hostage for roughly two hours during a dramatic heist in Naples, Italy, before escaping through an underground tunnel believed to connect to the city’s sewer network, according to police and local media reports. The raid took place at a Crédit Agricole branch in the Arenella district at around 11:30am local time.

Reports said three masked men, at least one of them armed, forced people inside the bank into a back room while targeting safe deposit boxes rather than cash. Emergency crews later freed the hostages, and no serious injuries were reported, though some people were treated for shock.

By the time police moved in, the suspects had already disappeared through a hole in the floor and into the tunnel system. Investigators are now examining how the route was prepared and whether the robbery involved months of planning or possible inside assistance. The value of what was stolen has not yet been confirmed.
